RWN Foundation has granted to the Louisiana Bucket Brigade in 2020 and 2021 to support their work with Rise St. James and Inclusive (two local organizations) to stop the building of a new Formosa Plastics factory, which would be the largest proposed new source of greenhouse gasses in the nation. St. James Parish, located in the sprawling “Cancer Alley” of communities heavily impacted by the health impacts of industrial pollution, has successfully fought off this new factory thus far, and the Louisiana Bucket Brigade/Rise St. James is now seeking not only a permanent revocation of its building permits but also a moratorium on any new petrochemical facilities. Given these factories’ high levels of greenhouse gas emissions, such fights, while seemingly local, have a much wider impact on both public health and on climate change.
